The Fee Is $35, Pass or Fail
A Massachusetts state inspection costs $35 for a passenger car, and the price is set by the state, so it is the same at every licensed station. You pay it whether the car passes or not. There is no refund for a rejection sticker, and no discount for a car that only needed the safety half of the test.
That $35 covers both parts of the inspection: the safety check (brakes, tires, lights, wipers, steering, suspension, windshield, horn, mirrors, seat belts) and the emissions check, which on any 1996 or newer car means plugging into the onboard computer. Electric vehicles skip the emissions portion but pay the same $35. We wrote a separate page for Tesla owners on the Massachusetts inspection for Teslas.
What You Might Pay Beyond the Fee
The fee is the small number. Here is where the money actually goes when an inspection turns into a bill.
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Inspection fee | $35 | Set by the state. Same at every station. Paid pass or fail. |
| Re-test after a failure | $0 | One free re-test within 60 days, at the station that did the original inspection. Go anywhere else and you pay $35 again. |
| Expired sticker ticket | $40 | A citation for driving on an expired sticker is $40 and is treated as a moving violation, which can affect your insurance. |
| Pre-inspection check at our shop | $100 to $160 | Applied to any repair we do. Catches the bulb, the wiper, the tire before the station does. |
| Burnt-out bulb | $15 to $60 | The cheapest fail there is. LED headlamp assemblies cost more. |
| Wiper blades | $30 to $80 | Installed. |
| Tires | $120 to $250 per tire | Installed and balanced. Add an alignment if they wore unevenly. |
| Brake pads and rotors | $250 to $700 per axle | The most common safety failure we see. |
| Check engine light | $100 to $160 to diagnose | Plus the repair. An illuminated light is an automatic emissions failure. |
Ranges are typical for a common passenger car at an independent shop, parts and labor. Every job at our shop gets a written estimate first.
When the Sticker Is Due
The sticker expires on the last day of the month printed on it. A car you just bought or just registered in Massachusetts has to be inspected within seven days of the registration date. Stations are busiest in the last week of the month, so a sticker that expires in October is easier to get on the 10th than on the 29th.
If you have a rejection sticker, the 60-day window for the free re-test starts on the date of the original inspection, not the date of the second failure. We covered that detail, and the rule about safety repairs having to be done before you drive the car, in what happens when a Massachusetts inspection fails.
Why a Pre-Inspection Check Is Cheaper Than a Fail
Most rejections are for things anyone can see in ten minutes with the car on a lift: a bulb, a torn wiper, a tire down to the wear bars, pads at the limit, a cracked windshield. Fail on one of those and you have paid $35, lost a morning, and still have to fix it and come back.
Our pre-inspection check runs through the state's safety list and plugs into the computer to confirm the emissions monitors are ready. Anything that would fail gets a written price on the spot. Fix it, go to the station once, done. The check fee comes off the repair, so if the car needed brakes anyway, the check cost you nothing.
We are not an inspection station, and we do not issue stickers. Any licensed Massachusetts station can; the state keeps a list on mass.gov. What we do is the part that decides whether you walk out with a sticker or a rejection: the brake repair, the wheel alignment that saves the new tires, and the check engine light diagnosis that clears the emissions test.
