Worn Shocks and Struts: The Signs Most Drivers Miss

Nobody Notices Their Shocks Wearing Out

Brakes squeal. Exhausts get loud. A check engine light turns itself on. Shocks and struts give you none of that. They degrade a few percent a year, your driving adapts without you deciding to, and one day you get into a car with fresh ones and realize how far yours had gone.

That slow fade is why worn suspension is the most under-serviced system on the car, and why it quietly costs people money in tires and brakes.

What They Actually Do

Springs hold the car up. Shocks and struts control the springs. Without damping, a spring that gets compressed by a bump keeps oscillating, so the tire bounces instead of staying planted.

A tire that is bouncing is not gripping. That is the whole issue, and it is why this is a safety item and not a comfort item. Worn shocks measurably lengthen stopping distances, and the effect is worst on exactly the surface where you need it most: wet, uneven pavement.

A strut does the same job but is also a structural part of the suspension, which is why replacing struts usually means an alignment afterward and replacing shocks often does not.

The Driveway Tests

Two things you can check yourself in about five minutes.

The bounce test. Push down hard on one corner of the car, over the wheel, and let go. It should rise back up and settle. If it keeps bobbing two or three more times, that damper is not doing its job. Do all four corners and compare, since one bad corner next to three good ones is obvious.

The leak check. Look behind the wheel at the shock or strut body. A light film of oil is normal. Wet streaks running down the body, or a visible drip line with dirt stuck to it, means the seal has failed and the fluid is gone. A shock with no fluid in it does nothing at all.

What You Feel from the Driver's Seat

  • The nose dives hard under braking, more than it used to.
  • The car leans noticeably in corners and on highway ramps.
  • It floats over dips and rises on the highway, a mild seasick feeling.
  • It wanders in a crosswind or when a truck passes you, and needs constant small steering corrections.
  • Rear-end squat when you accelerate away from a light.
  • Clunking over bumps, which usually means a strut mount or a bushing rather than the damper itself.
  • Every bump feels sharper, because the damper no longer absorbs the rebound.

The Tell on the Tires

Cupping. Run your hand around the tread and feel for a scalloped pattern, high and low spots at regular intervals around the circumference. That is a bouncing tire hitting the road unevenly, and it is close to a definitive sign of worn dampers.

This is the part that turns a comfort complaint into a money conversation. Worn shocks destroy tires, and a set of tires costs about what the shocks would have. People often buy the tires, keep the bad shocks, and then destroy the new set the same way.

New England Is Harder on Them

Frost heaves, potholes, and patched-over patches. Every impact loads the damper and the mount. Add road salt going after the shock bodies and mounting hardware, and a set that might last 80,000 or 100,000 miles somewhere mild often needs attention sooner here.

The other local factor is that a hard pothole hit can bend a strut outright rather than wear it. If the ride changed suddenly rather than gradually, that is usually what happened, and it needs an alignment check as well.

How We Handle It

We replace shocks and struts in pairs, front or rear together. Putting a new damper on one side and leaving the old one on the other gives you a car that behaves differently left to right, which is worse than two evenly worn ones.

On struts we do an alignment afterward, because pulling a strut changes camber. We also look at the mounts, bearings, and bushings while it is apart, since those are cheap alongside the labor already being spent and are frequently the actual source of a clunk.

And if your shocks are fine, we tell you they are fine. A bouncy ride is sometimes tire pressure, a bent wheel, or a worn sway bar link, and none of those need a strut.
